Dulsco Environment is steadfast in its commitment to providing sustainable environmental solutions in the UAE. Evolving from a waste transporter to a waste treatment solutions provider, the company has been at the forefront of promoting sustainable infrastructure and utilising advanced technologies for repurposing waste.
John Grainger, COO, Dulsco Environment, speaks about the company’s recent milestones and future plans.
- How have you grown over the past year?
Drawing on years of expertise, Dulsco Environment is committed to providing holistic solutions to its diverse clients helping them address their waste and sustainability challenges and goals. Due to its exceptional customer experiences, it has successfully onboarded new clients in 2023, bringing its customer base to over 2,200.
In 2022, we conducted an exercise to measure our carbon footprint. Subsequently, we implemented initiatives and a roadmap to reduce our footprint and help our customers reduce theirs by diverting their waste away from landfills, either by recycling it or bringing it back to life.
Dulsco Environment was appointed to provide on-site waste management services at Expo City Dubai including the Conference of Parties (COP28). This built on our success at Expo 2020 Dubai – officially named the most sustainable World Fair to date – where we diverted more than 90 per cent of waste away from landfill before and during the event.
- What new sustainable products/services are being developed?
In a proactive move this year, we implemented initiatives aimed at enhancing diversion efforts by redirecting some of the waste that used to be previously sent to the landfill, to other industries as an alternative fuel source, therefore reducing the need for these industries to use fossil fuels. Before being utilised as a final product, these materials undergo pre-treatment to ensure optimal utilisation.
- What are your circular economy initiatives in the last 12 months and what have you planned for the future?
Dulsco Environment is dedicated to taking a national role in advancing sustainable infrastructure and leading the way in adopting innovative technologies for waste repurposing. We have established our position as a leading solutions provider and are helping shape the future of the waste management space in the UAE. Our Liquid Treatment Facility (LTF), Material Recovery Facility (MRF), Construction and Demolition(C&D) Waste Recycling Plants, and our New Old and Reloved upcycling initiative demonstrate an unwavering commitment to delivering sustainable waste management and environmental solutions and support UAE’s Circular Economy Policy and Net Zero 2050 initiatives. By helping to reduce the amount of waste that ends up in landfills, these facilities help in reducing greenhouse gases emissions and offer our customers sustainable solutions to their waste problems.
Last year, we successfully implemented Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF) Plant at Expo 2020 Dubai, which treats waste utilising innovative processing methodology, producing a refuse-derived fuel product. We are now in the process of relocating our RDF facility to DIC which will enable us to significantly contribute to waste diversion and provide an alternate fuel source.
At COP28, Dulsco was the partner for the first-ever Waste and Resources Pavilion at a COP, hosted by the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA). It was a platform for conversations on circular economy, decarbonised waste management, and environmental preservation in line with the Paris Agreement. COP28 provided Dulsco with an excellent business opportunity to increase our already expansive clientele, furthering the company message and enhancing the landscape of sustainability practices within the region.
- Where do you want your business to be in 2024?
Over the next year, our key business focus is maximising and expanding our waste treatment facilities with the launch of new facilities, emphasising our dedication to delivering comprehensive environmental solutions. With urban populations growing, the demand for sustainable waste management services is increasing, providing a significant opportunity for us to offer advanced waste minimisation and diversion strategies. Building a strong portfolio of loyal customers who share our passion for the environment will remain a priority for our business.
Our strategic concentration will revolve around delivering high-quality waste management services. We aim to ensure operational transparency, actively contribute to clients’ waste diversion and carbon reduction strategies, and closely align with the UAE’s Net Zero by 2050 target and broader regional ambitions. This strategic move not only positions us as a leading industry provider but also underscores our commitment to supporting environmental sustainability and meeting the evolving needs of the market.
